In November I went to the Pictage PartnerCon conference where I heard Steve Depino speak.  One of his agenda items was the “30 things” exercise.  It was simple enough – create a list of 30 things that you want to do in your life (while this was a photography conference they didn’t have to be about photography).  Once you had your 30, no simple task, you go through the list eliminating ones that were of less priority than the others until you ended up with a list of 5.  The 5 things that you really want to do that, by virtue of the exercise, are the highest priority in your life.  These are the things you are passionate about, that will jump you out of bed in the morning and connect your work to your spirit.   The final step was to take your list and scheduling time for these things, working them into your daily life, because as we all know when it’s busy the things you love are the first to be de-prioritized!

When I came home from the conference I sat down to do my “30 things” exercise.  It took several days and several conversations with myself about what is important and what is not important to me.  I had to keep reminding myself that even if something did not make the list it didn’t mean I couldn’t do it during 2010 – the internal wrangling that went on!!!  In the end I was quite happy with my list.  Instead of creating New Year’s Resolution  I have my list!   You will see the results of these on my blog and on facebook as I make my way through “5 in 10″

1. Make Art Daily – Pick up my camera!  Finish crocheting that scarf I started!  Return to making the girls Halloween costumes!  This one should be easy.  As a first step Matt and I created a some work areas in the basement.  Now I have space to get out my sewing machine or my mat cutter or just to have the girls over to draw and create!

2. Out From Behind The Desk:  What this really means is spend more time on relationships.  A bit open ended but I am going to see where it takes me.  I moved to Maine to be closer to my family, and geographically I am, but in terms of my schedule they aren’t always in there as a priority.  This year I am going to make more time for those relationships and a host of others – get out there I say!  Join the world!

3.  Read 50 Books: – I love to read- LOVE TO READ!  But some days curling with a book seems like too much of an indulgence when there is work to be done.  Originally this was read 1 book a week – but I know some weeks are going to go faster than others, and some books are larger than others – so I am going to keep it at read 50 books this year.  I love everything from fiction to non-fiction, business and biographies so finding books to read will be no problem.  If you have read a great book recently leave the name and title in the comments section – I love a good recommendation!

4. Hit The Road:  Also known as travel more.  Simple!  We are going to take 1 overnight trip (for pleasure) every other month.  It’s crazy there are parts of New England that I have wanted to see but haven’t had a chance to get there yet!

5. Eat Like My Gram/The Year of Eating Marvelously:  I love to cook, love cookbooks, love trying out new things, love trying those things again to see if I can make it a little better.  Combine that with our ever growing desire to eat LSO (Local, season and organic) and I realize I want to eat just like my grandmother did.  Simple foods, made from scratch, with ingredients you can pronounce or better yet that you grew yourself.  Armed with Mark Bittmans’ “How to Cook Everything Vegetarian” and my grandmother’s recipe box I will cook and bake my way through 2010 getting more in touch with my food and hopefully making a cookbook of my Gram’s recipes at the same time:)

So there you have it my “5 in 10″ – I like to keep things simple:)

And because this post needs an image here are two girls I plan on spending more time with in 2010:)

Celebrating 15 Years

October 2, 2009

The other night I went to an Open House for PixelMEDIA – celebrating 15 years in business!  I once worked and PixelMEDIA and still keep in regular contact with some of the folks there – some of them are even my clients!  It was good to go to Portsmouth, see their  new office and catch up on the goings on.

Erik greeted people as the came in.

Clients were getting acclimated to the new place with a cool little map.

I wasn’t the only former employee to stop by :)

Erica and I!!! Erica is a designer at Pixel and  her love of clean white spaces used to be problematic for me but I have come around to her genius:)

The similarities are endless….

For my sophomore year of college I studied abroad in France.  I was nervous about going, my time over there was challenging but rewarding, I met my best friend while living there, in the end I wasn’t sure about going home and, most importantly, it was an experience that influenced the rest of my life.

I didn’t know it – but going to Roots Workshop last week was exactly the same.

I was nervous about going, Matt actually contacted Emilie first and laid the groundwork for me to go.    The nerves kicked in when I got there as well.  I was surrounded by some REALLY talented photographers, leaders who had won Pulitzer Prizes and whose work I had admired and we were all going to live in the same house for a week!    But once the week started I was swept up in the awesomeness of the experience.

My time at Roots was challenging and rewarding.   I thought the workshop was simple – learn to take better pictures and tell a better story.  What I didn’t realize was that the workshop was about how to be a better photographer on all kinds of levels.  The most surprising part of the experience was how the physicality of my photography changed.  How I hold the camera, how I position my body, how I physically react to different situations has been changed.    How did that happen?  How did that come out of a workshop that is about taking pictures?  I blame the house.  When you live in the same house with 15 other photographers you can not help but learn and grow.  Seeing talented photographers in action, how they treat their gear, how they approach a topic, what they see when they look at the same scenario I do was INVALUABLE and not something you get in other workshops.

Don’t get me wrong – I definitely learned how to take better pictures and am forever indebted to Tyler, Jen and Mark for the patience they showed me.   They shared with me(and all of us) their passion, knowledge and patience.  And like any great teacher you had in Kindergarten I will still be gleaning wisdom from their teaching years from now.

I met lots of best friends while I was there.  All of the other brave souls who were willing to have their work critiqued ALOT I now count as close friends!

By Friday I wasn’t sure about going home.  I missed home, hadn’t slept in days,  missed Matt like crazy but I wasn’t sure about leaving.  When you experience something so personal and special you are afraid to pop the bubble.  I knew once I pulled out of the driveway what I had been surrounded by for a week would be gone – that my time at Roots ‘09 would be over and I wouldn’t be able to get it back.   I just didn’t want to leave but I had to.  I had to get to Hailey’s camp graduation and since permanently moving into the house with everyone wasn’t an option I followed the advice of some old British propaganda and told myself to “Keep Calm and Carry On”

I am hopeful by getting this far in my blog post that you know the experience changed my life.  I look at images differently now.  I don’t take pictures now  – I make pictures.  I look at my relationships with other photographers and people differently.  I understand my role better.  I know what it is like to be changed and influenced by great people and this was one of those times.

It seems crazy I have mentioned the assigment yet.  I think that is a testament to the workshop itself.  It wasn’t about what your assigment was although mine was full of awesomeness.  It was about something different, something I didn’t understand until I had experienced it.  Since Emilie said it so much better than I can, I will quote her directly:

“The assignments are simply an exercise to put the art of seeing into practice and, thus, become better visual storytellers.”

But so we are clear my assigment did ROCK!  I had Four Seas Ice Cream in Centerville, MA.  They are the third oldest ice cream shop in New England, which is significant and yet compared to how good their ice cream is they could be the third youngest ice cream shop in the country and it would still be a crazy hot spot for ice cream on the Cape!  I am not ashamed to say I ate alot of ice cream, I ate it 3x a day for the 2 days I was shooting, I gained 2.5lbs last week and that was with RUNNING!  Can you imagine if I hadn’t run… I try not to.

The assignment had its pros (ice cream, happy kids) and its cons (small space, changing lighting conditions) but all the assignments did and if I had had my pick of assignments this would have been it.  I was so excited when Tyler gave it to me he thought he should take it back I just loved it that much.  Imagine my surprise at the end of day 1 when Tyler said “you don’t really have anything workable here”. How can that be when I love a place so much!!!   I will admit it was intimidating to hear that but I am thankful for his (and Jen and Mark’s) feedback, help and honesty.   I learned to so much and in the end I am super proud of my slideshow.  I am especially proud of this image that Tyler and I worked very hard for as night descended upon us the second day.

Our final night included a video presentation of everyone’s work.  My slideshow is below.  I love my slideshow but it wasn’t the best part.  The best part of the evening was having Tyler stand up there with me and knowing that Tyler, Jen and Mark were as proud of me, my growth and my slideshow as I was – that kind of moment is priceless.

Beach House 2009

July 5, 2009

A few weeks ago we went on vacation!!  I have wanted for the past several years to rent a house at the beach and go with my family.  This year I made it happen and I went to Morse River Conservation with my sister, brother in law, my nieces and Matt.  I had high hopes of a week spent in my bathing suit, days at the beach, evenings playing games and making smores, hanging out watching stars around a campfire while the girls giggles coming from their bedrooms wrapping around us like a warm summer memory.
Yeah – that was not to be.

As anyone who has been anywhere near Maine recently knows we had the 5th wettest June on record.  I got SO LUCKY with my shoots this month and not so lucky on the vacation.  Despite all of that we had a great time!  I read the entire Twilight Saga (I really am not a fan of Bella and yet I can’t stop reading them:), played LOTS of games, ate all of our meals as a family, had a few good old fashioned arguments and played lots of Rummikub! We had our share of issues (bugs, snakes and a generally dirty state of the house) but a good time was had by all!  We haven’t even totally closed ourselves off to going again there next year but we would pack differently if we were going to have all this rain.
I didn’t shoot as many pictures as I thought I would – how could I when I had Bella and Edward to deal with – but I got enough shots in for a funny slideshow and some pictures of the girls!

Enjoy!

This weeks “big” run

June 12, 2009

Blog has been quiet since Memorial Day – my goodness have we been busy!  But I haven’t been sitting on my couch watching Twilight over and over – NO!  I have taken up running!

My weight loss has been stuck at ~45lbs for a LONG WHILE now and my doctor recommended running – so I did it.  I thought there wasn’t much to it but to get up and run but I was wrong!!  Running is much like photography or crafting or any other hobby! You need to have the right gear (I was fitted for sneakers), the planning is important (which days to run, which days to rest, etc) and good music always helps!

I even got myself a Nike+iPod insert for my sneakers and I have to tell you that has actually been the best motivator!  The techie in me loves that it tracks my runs (time, distance, speed and calories) and then it goes one step further and uploads it to the Nike Plus website.  The site allows me to get all kinds of feedback!!  Fastest run, longest run, what my progress has been, etc.

Even geekier is the Nike Mini I created.  Its a custom avatar you create that you can post in a variety of places (mine is on my facebook account) or have as a screen saver.  I almost never have a screen saver but I thought I would give this one a try and I loved it!  If you don’t log a run for a few days the Niki-mini in your screen saver gets sluggish and starts complaining about not running and says she is turning into a coach potato!  It cracked me up but it also was a wake up call I hadn’t run since Saturday – so yesterday I got out there!  Here is a widget of my run!

If you are a runner/walker and you use an iPod Nano I suggest the Nike +iPod combo – it will shake up your routine!

All my best,

Audra!
