Let's just say Matt and I gained weight this week shall we! A gain is a chance to learn something new - remain calm and carry on. #2 hours ago
Jen and Eamonn were married on July 18th at Partridge Rock B&B in a wedding that was so full of moments and memories I wasn’t sure where to start with the slideshow. It seemed every time I turned around something special was happening! Jen and Eamonn’s family traveled from near and far (some from Ireland) to bear witness to the love and commitment they have for each other. One of my favorite moment’s of the day was when Jen reached the alter, they grabbed for each others hand, and she said “I love you” to Eamonn in a way that gave me goosebumps – she was just that sure and that solid and that happy!
Jen and Eamonn were married at Partridge Rock B&B in Center Sandwich, NH – a wonderful old gentleman’s barn that was full of good light! The food was expertly catered by The Common Man Restaurant .
It poured buckets the night before the wedding, when I woke up that morning I wasn’t sure Jen was going to need these:
Jen’s dress was gorgeous and she had a troop of able hand to help lace up the back.
Jen’s grandfather kindly took us out on the barge for some shots – I will admit to being nervous – no one likes a wet photographer:)
Honestly – would you have ever known that it poured the night before! GORGEOUS!!
Details, details, details – Jen had some wonderful details and decorations at her wedding :)
Waiting for his bride…..
The wedding party had some of the cutest kids
FIRST KISS!!
Mr. and Mrs:
There were some wonderful heartfelt speeches given…..
And kind notes left in the guest book….
And then the party started!!

Eamonn sang a beautiful song for Jen called Black Is The Colour. It was incredibly moving. The version that Eamonn sang is sung by a well known Irish folk musician named Christy Moore who was a huge influence on Eamonn. (Thank you Eamonn for the information!)
Jen and Eamonn made a grand getaway under a canopy of hands and raced away in an awesome get-away car!
The party continued even after Jen and Eamonn left – there was just too much fun going on!
Thank you Jen and Eamonn – I had a wonderful time!
For my sophomore year of college I studied abroad in France. I was nervous about going, my time over there was challenging but rewarding, I met my best friend while living there, in the end I wasn’t sure about going home and, most importantly, it was an experience that influenced the rest of my life.
I didn’t know it – but going to Roots Workshop last week was exactly the same.
I was nervous about going, Matt actually contacted Emilie first and laid the groundwork for me to go. The nerves kicked in when I got there as well. I was surrounded by some REALLY talented photographers, leaders who had won Pulitzer Prizes and whose work I had admired and we were all going to live in the same house for a week! But once the week started I was swept up in the awesomeness of the experience.
My time at Roots was challenging and rewarding. I thought the workshop was simple – learn to take better pictures and tell a better story. What I didn’t realize was that the workshop was about how to be a better photographer on all kinds of levels. The most surprising part of the experience was how the physicality of my photography changed. How I hold the camera, how I position my body, how I physically react to different situations has been changed. How did that happen? How did that come out of a workshop that is about taking pictures? I blame the house. When you live in the same house with 15 other photographers you can not help but learn and grow. Seeing talented photographers in action, how they treat their gear, how they approach a topic, what they see when they look at the same scenario I do was INVALUABLE and not something you get in other workshops.
Don’t get me wrong – I definitely learned how to take better pictures and am forever indebted to Tyler, Jen and Mark for the patience they showed me. They shared with me(and all of us) their passion, knowledge and patience. And like any great teacher you had in Kindergarten I will still be gleaning wisdom from their teaching years from now.
I met lots of best friends while I was there. All of the other brave souls who were willing to have their work critiqued ALOT I now count as close friends!
By Friday I wasn’t sure about going home. I missed home, hadn’t slept in days, missed Matt like crazy but I wasn’t sure about leaving. When you experience something so personal and special you are afraid to pop the bubble. I knew once I pulled out of the driveway what I had been surrounded by for a week would be gone – that my time at Roots ‘09 would be over and I wouldn’t be able to get it back. I just didn’t want to leave but I had to. I had to get to Hailey’s camp graduation and since permanently moving into the house with everyone wasn’t an option I followed the advice of some old British propaganda and told myself to “Keep Calm and Carry On”
I am hopeful by getting this far in my blog post that you know the experience changed my life. I look at images differently now. I don’t take pictures now – I make pictures. I look at my relationships with other photographers and people differently. I understand my role better. I know what it is like to be changed and influenced by great people and this was one of those times.
It seems crazy I have mentioned the assigment yet. I think that is a testament to the workshop itself. It wasn’t about what your assigment was although mine was full of awesomeness. It was about something different, something I didn’t understand until I had experienced it. Since Emilie said it so much better than I can, I will quote her directly:
“The assignments are simply an exercise to put the art of seeing into practice and, thus, become better visual storytellers.”
But so we are clear my assigment did ROCK! I had Four Seas Ice Cream in Centerville, MA. They are the third oldest ice cream shop in New England, which is significant and yet compared to how good their ice cream is they could be the third youngest ice cream shop in the country and it would still be a crazy hot spot for ice cream on the Cape! I am not ashamed to say I ate alot of ice cream, I ate it 3x a day for the 2 days I was shooting, I gained 2.5lbs last week and that was with RUNNING! Can you imagine if I hadn’t run… I try not to.
The assignment had its pros (ice cream, happy kids) and its cons (small space, changing lighting conditions) but all the assignments did and if I had had my pick of assignments this would have been it. I was so excited when Tyler gave it to me he thought he should take it back I just loved it that much. Imagine my surprise at the end of day 1 when Tyler said “you don’t really have anything workable here”. How can that be when I love a place so much!!! I will admit it was intimidating to hear that but I am thankful for his (and Jen and Mark’s) feedback, help and honesty. I learned to so much and in the end I am super proud of my slideshow. I am especially proud of this image that Tyler and I worked very hard for as night descended upon us the second day.
Our final night included a video presentation of everyone’s work. My slideshow is below. I love my slideshow but it wasn’t the best part. The best part of the evening was having Tyler stand up there with me and knowing that Tyler, Jen and Mark were as proud of me, my growth and my slideshow as I was – that kind of moment is priceless.
A few weeks ago we went on vacation!! I have wanted for the past several years to rent a house at the beach and go with my family. This year I made it happen and I went to Morse River Conservation with my sister, brother in law, my nieces and Matt. I had high hopes of a week spent in my bathing suit, days at the beach, evenings playing games and making smores, hanging out watching stars around a campfire while the girls giggles coming from their bedrooms wrapping around us like a warm summer memory.
Yeah – that was not to be.
As anyone who has been anywhere near Maine recently knows we had the 5th wettest June on record. I got SO LUCKY with my shoots this month and not so lucky on the vacation. Despite all of that we had a great time! I read the entire Twilight Saga (I really am not a fan of Bella and yet I can’t stop reading them:), played LOTS of games, ate all of our meals as a family, had a few good old fashioned arguments and played lots of Rummikub! We had our share of issues (bugs, snakes and a generally dirty state of the house) but a good time was had by all! We haven’t even totally closed ourselves off to going again there next year but we would pack differently if we were going to have all this rain.
I didn’t shoot as many pictures as I thought I would – how could I when I had Bella and Edward to deal with – but I got enough shots in for a funny slideshow and some pictures of the girls!
Enjoy!
These faces sum up how we felt about the weather:)
The nice days have been few and far between this month! I was blessed to have the rain hold of on my mini-session day on June 13th! I love my mini-session days! It gives me a chance to connect with lots of families, take great shots of the kids and have some fun playing around in the park! Of course with a day full of shooting comes some great images so I thought I would share some from the day.
I am planning on doing another mini-session day closer to Christmas for families who are looking for just images for their Christmas cards or to give as gifts! Leave me a comment below if you would like to be added to the mailing list and I can notify you of my Christmas Mini-Session!
Baby J and her mom contacted me after seeing my session with Little R earlier this spring. I love when clients come to me from family recommendations – it means I am doing all the right things!
Her mom told me over email that Baby J looks wonderful in yellow and boy was she right! She was the most adorable baby! We meet at a park down by the beach and even though we had her out of her comfort zone she was so good to work with and gave us some of the greatest expressions!
When her mom told me yellow I grabbed my purple kiddie stool to see if we could work it into the session. She has some cute baby knees:)
Baby J isn’t quite walking yet, I thought she might grab on and but she was more interested in showing me her mad crawling skills.
We headed out to a shadier spot to catch a different bit of light and some bubbles!
Baby J ended the session on a contemplative note….
I love vintage looking images so I of course love this one of Baby J and her mom:
Thank you Baby J – I can’t wait to see how much you grow this year!
